Unfortunately, we have to postpone tomorrow's even Unfortunately, we have to postpone tomorrow's event due to wet weather 😭 (we are looking at holding it in the first week of May)
We are happy to be invited to present and share ou We are happy to be invited to present and share our partnership experiences with the School of Social Work @unsw, who host a Japanese delegation of social work academics... it is great to see how interested our Japanese counterparts are in the community services in Australia.

The Federation of Ethnic Communities' Council of A The Federation of Ethnic Communities' Council of Australia (FECCA) is encouraging people and organisations in Australia to observe and refer to the 21st of March as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD).

In 1998, the Howard Government declared the 21st of March as 'Harmony Day', making Australia the only country in the world that refers to this day differently from other nations.

We believe it is important to acknowledge that racism exists and that we should all work collaboratively to eliminate it. However, in 2023, it is time that the community reclaim the original UN-declared day, rather than undermining lived experiences of racism in favour of promoting the idea of harmony. In the process, we can still celebrate the great diversity of cultures that makes Australia unique, and without addressing racism, we will not achieve harmony.

One of the first steps in overcoming racism is naming the problem, and this is one day of the year in particular where this should be done.

The United Nations theme for 2023 focuses on the urgency of combating racism and racial discrimination, 75 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is an opportunity for Australians to reflect on the nation’s history of racism and recommit ourselves to implementing strategies that tackle this complex issue.

The Challenging Racism Project in a 2015-2016 survey found that 20% of Australians surveyed had experienced racial discrimination in the form of race hate talk, and 5% had been attacked due to their race. This is particularly relevant amongst First Nations peoples, as the 2022 Australian Reconciliation Barometer published by Reconciliation Australia revealed that 60% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had experienced at least one form of racial prejudice in the past six months.

If you chat with each other, you are less likely to make assumptions about what the other person expects. Deciding to wear a condom is about keeping yourself safe, and your partners safe.

The Yabun Festival is an annual celebration of Abo The Yabun Festival is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture; held every year on Australia Day (January 26th) on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people at Victoria Park in Camperdown in Sydney.

Yabun translates to ‘music to a beat’ in the Gadigal language.
https://whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/events/yabun-festival

The Festival was first held in 2001 and is a celebration of the world’s oldest living culture. It’s where you can enjoy live music and traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural performances, hear panel discussions and participate in community forums on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.

Many popular musicians and other entertainers also appear on stage at the festival. You can buy a huge range of indigenous-themed merchandise at numerous stalls, including clothing, jewellery, art, and craft.

Yabun Festival welcomes everyone to join us in this one-of-a-kind event which honours the survival of the world’s oldest living culture, in-person in Victoria Park, via Koori Radio 93.7FM in Greater Sydney or via video live stream at Yabun.org.au.

Camperdown is 4km south-west of the Sydney CBD. It’s best to catch public transport (train or bus) to the Yabun Festival because there are often road closures and special event clearways near the city on Australia Day. The Australia Day Council of NSW also provides a free shuttle bus service at selected times between Circular Quay and the Yabun Festival
