Counterpoint’s Latest Report: Delivering Impact Where It Matters Most

by | Feb 23, 2026 | Reports, Resources | 0 comments

We often hear about the strength of a community, but it is rare to see that strength measured in concrete numbers. At Counterpoint Community Services, we believe in transparency and the power of data to tell our story. We have recently completed an independent comprehensive review of our services, achievements, and future directions.

This report is not just a collection of statistics. It is a testament to the resilience of our Redfern and Waterloo neighbours and the hard work of our dedicated team. The findings confirm that we are punching well above our weight, delivering vital support to those who need it most across the Sydney Local Government Area (LGA).

Below, we unpack the key findings from our latest report and what they mean for the future of our organisation.

A Year of Significant Engagement

The past year has been one of our busiest on record. We have focused intently on being present, accessible, and responsive. The numbers reflect this commitment. Over the last 12 months, we engaged more than 2,700 people through our various community events.

Beyond these broad engagement numbers, our team provided intensive, individual support to 751 clients. These are not just figures on a page; they represent 751 individuals and families who received direct assistance, advocacy, or care during difficult times.

Leading the Way in Targeted Support

One of the most striking findings in the report is the sheer volume of support we provide relative to other organisations in the area. Under the Targeted Earlier Intervention (TEI) program, Counterpoint delivered more than 20% of all TEI clients in the Sydney LGA between 2020 and 2024. This highlights our role as a primary pillar of support in the inner city.

We are particularly proud of our ability to reach diverse communities. The report highlights that we supported 42% of the entire Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) cohort in the region. Furthermore, 48% of our individual clients identify as CALD, and 9% identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

This data validates our approach: we are a service for everyone, ensuring no one is left behind regardless of their background or language.

Nurturing the Next Generation at Poets Corner

Our commitment to community starts with our youngest members. Poets Corner Preschool continues to be a shining example of inclusive early childhood education.

The report details how the preschool currently provides a nurturing environment for 29 children. Many of these children have additional needs, and our educators work tirelessly to ensure they receive the same opportunities to learn and grow as their peers. Poets Corner remains a critical asset for local families, offering high-quality care right in the heart of the community.

Advocacy in Action: The Waterloo Redevelopment

Our work extends beyond direct service delivery; we also fight for the long-term interests of our neighbourhood. The report acknowledges Counterpoint’s strategic leadership role in the ongoing Waterloo redevelopment.

We currently co-chair the human services group, placing us at the table where decisions are made. This involvement allows us to influence government partnerships directly and ensure the voices of residents are heard during this major urban transformation. As one stakeholder noted in the review, “Counterpoint has done a terrific job keeping government accountable.”

Looking Ahead: Strategic Plan 2025–28

While we celebrate these achievements, we are already looking to the future. This review serves as a foundation for our Strategic Plan 2025–28.

The report outlines several key recommendations we will focus on, including operational strengthening, securing sustainable funding, and refining our profile and communication. These steps will ensure Counterpoint remains a robust, independent voice for Redfern and Waterloo for years to come.
